When I got the email from Cafe Juanita about their latest wine dinner I immediately emailed to book a seat. Betz Family winery is one of my favorite Washington wines and at the annual wine festival in March they are one of the first to run out of wine samples. They also don’t have a tasting room like most other wineries so just have to buy them at retail stores or through their wine club. They produce only reds which is fine by me and chef Holly Smith did an amazing job creating dishes to match the wines. Really hard for me to pick a favorite since everything was amazing but I did think the passionfruit didn’t pair well with the chocolate.
The wines were great and I ended up buying a bottle of the Grenache and Cab Sauv. Bob Betz spent a fair amount of time describing the wines and his winemaking philosophy. The first two Syrahs were from different regions and you could taste how their terroir influenced the final product, it was great listening to someone so passionate about their work.
